The West Australian features Family Rules
We are not the Kardashians: Perth family in fly-on-wall doco
When documentary makers approached Perth mother Daniella Borg and her nine daughters about starring in their own TV show, her initial reaction was shock.
“We were surprised. We were approached after a documentary was done on my daughter Angela Rule, so from that first documentary based on her aspirations to enter the music world, people found us interesting and they wanted to do another documentary,” she says. “So that’s how it all started.”
What resulted was Family Rules, NITV’s six-part fly-on-the-wall docu-series that charts the lives of Borg and her daughters — Angela, Shenika, Helen, Kelly, Kiara, Sharna, Aleisha, Jessica and Hannah — as they try to navigate their way through motherhood, adolescence and adulthood.
Admittedly, being shadowed by a film crew for several months took some getting used to.
“As with anything, when you first start something, it is quite daunting especially with the cameras in your face,” Borg says.
“But we were lucky enough to develop a relationship with the crew so it made it easy for us to relax and be ourselves.
“So through the whole experience . . . it just felt like they were part of the family. So I think the way they went about their business was quite remarkable, really.
