Family Rules a TV highlight in the Sydney Morning Herald
TV highlights: Wednesday, January 18
SBS suffered a 2016 annus horribilis, with pundits muttering darkly about the new Viceland channel and its relationship to the hoary old SBS charter (in particular, that troublesome bit about reflecting Australia’s multicultural society). So it was just in the nick of time that the six-part doco Family Rules came along to save the day with its unaffected and very lifelike depiction of a modern, urban Indigenous family comprising nine feisty young women and their feistier mother Daniella, who has raised her girls alone after losing her husband to a one-punch attack. It all winds up this week with the extended Rule clan road-tripping to the heart of the WA desert to their father’s resting place in Nagdju country on the edge of the Nullarbor. Farewell, family Rule; we’ll miss you. LD
